Alice Palmer at Other Art Fair Talks about her work and Brexit

P- Hi we are here at the Other Art Fair with Alice Palmer and we are going to talk a little bit about her work today

P- Hi Alice how are you?

A- I am good thank you,  how are you?

P- I am good thank you. I am very interested in your work so, it looks very textile, almost tactile and very colourful. I wasn’t sure what it was about when I first saw it because the meaning didn’t jump out at me at first. Would you like to tell me more about your work?

A- Ok, for this series I’ve been interested by politics just basically what is going on in the world at the moment … the governments in disarray there’s a lot of interesting things happening right now with Brexit.. the article 50 nearing it’s two weeks tomorrow we are supposed to leave the EU!

– Theoretically…

A- Theoretically but is that going to happen is another question… (laughs)

P- Hmm (looking at her work) and who is Juliette Lewis?

A- She is a rock star ex actress…

P- Oh I know who that is she did that movie Natural Born Killers so… oh she is tweeting about the government…

A- She reposted a what an ordains Instagram message while government shut down somebody started a new one and basically and that is what I was thinking and I pressed like and 46,000 other people also pressed like and I find it interesting how other people interact with social media

P- Yes true… and I heard you started making art professionally 4 years ago what made you start this type of work and what inspires you?

A- All sorts inspire me like when I worked in fashion it was pop art, Bowie, physics, science and other artist but for this series it is mainly politics and mainly American and British politics that influence these pieces. I normally just go by a feeling so you know whatever I am thinking or feeling that day then the art just sort of comes out from nowhere so I never really know what I am going to do until I get down and and do it

P- Well yea (laughs) that’s quite interesting…  well good luck with the show I like it when people can tackle something that is quite serious in a new medium in a way that might not be so apparent

A- Thank you
